Back Pain Treatment in Phoenix & Scottsdale

Chiropractic back pain treatment at Life Chiropractic starts with finding out why your back hurts. At our Phoenix–Ahwatukee and North Scottsdale offices, we examine your spine, pelvis and hips, take X-rays when appropriate and, if chiropractic care is a good fit, build a plan that may include gentle adjustments, pelvic blocking, spinal decompression, massage therapy and core exercises. If your back needs an MRI or a surgical opinion, we’ll refer you. See our overview of chiropractic care for pain for other conditions we help with.

Is this you?

  • You need a few minutes in the morning before you can stand up straight.
  • Sitting through a workday or a long drive leaves your low back aching.
  • You brace yourself before lifting a child, groceries or laundry.
  • The pain sometimes travels into your buttock or down a leg.
  • Rest and stretching help for a while, but the pain keeps coming back.

Common Back Pain Symptoms:

  • Dull ache or stiffness in the lower back
  • Sharp or shooting pains radiating down the legs (sciatica)
  • Muscle spasms or tightness
  • Difficulty bending, twisting, or standing for extended periods
  • Reduced range of motion and flexibility

Potential Causes of Back Pain:

  • Poor Posture: Slouching or hunching can strain your back muscles and misalign your spine.
  • Improper Lifting Techniques: Lifting heavy objects incorrectly can put undue stress on your back.
  • Muscle Strain or Sprain: Overexertion or repetitive movements can lead to muscle strain or sprains in your back.
  • Degenerative Disc Disease: Discs between your vertebrae can wear down over time, causing pain and discomfort.
  • Sciatica: Irritation of the sciatic nerve can cause pain that travels down the leg. See sciatica care.
  • Arthritis: Inflammation of the joints in your spine can lead to back pain.
  • Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal can pinch nerves and cause pain.

When to See a Medical Doctor First

Some back pain needs a medical doctor before a chiropractor. Get medical care right away if you have:

  • Loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in the groin or inner thighs
  • Leg weakness that is getting worse, or a foot that drags or slaps when you walk
  • Back pain after a car crash or a hard fall
  • Back pain with a fever or chills
  • Unexplained weight loss, a history of cancer, or pain that is worse at night and doesn’t ease with rest

What to Expect at Your First Back Pain Visit

  • Your story. Where it hurts, when it started, what set it off, and how sitting, bending, lifting and sleep affect it.
  • A hands-on exam. We check how you bend and twist, your posture and pelvis, and the reflexes, strength and sensation in your legs.
  • X-rays when appropriate. Low-dose X-rays help us see your spine’s alignment and rule out other causes.
  • A clear plan. We explain what we found, whether chiropractic care can help, how long we expect care to take, how often we recommend visits, and the cost. If you need an MRI or a surgical opinion, we refer you.

Your first back pain visit at Life Chiropractic in four steps: your story, a hands-on exam, X-rays when appropriate, and a clear plan with referral for an MRI or surgical opinion when needed.

How Life Chiropractic Can Help with Back Pain Treatment:

At our Phoenix–Ahwatukee and North Scottsdale offices, we work with you to understand what’s causing your back pain. We offer a personalized back pain treatment plan designed to address your specific needs and alleviate your pain. Here are some of the techniques we may use:

  • Chiropractic Adjustments: Gentle adjustments may help improve spinal alignment, ease pain and help you move more easily.
  • Spinal Decompression: This non-invasive therapy may help ease pressure on irritated discs and nerves.
  • Pelvic Blocking: Padded wedges placed under the pelvis while you lie down, used to help ease strain on the low back and pelvis.
  • Massage Therapy: Massage can loosen tight muscles, improve blood flow, and promote relaxation.
  • Therapeutic Exercises: Strengthening exercises can improve core stability and support your back.
  • Lifestyle Modifications: We can offer advice on ergonomics, posture and other lifestyle changes to help reduce strain on your back.

How Back Pain Care Works

  • Settle the flare-up. Gentle adjustments and pelvic blocking, with spinal decompression or massage therapy when appropriate, aim to ease pressure and muscle guarding.
  • Build a stronger core. Home exercises for the muscles that support your low back, added as your pain allows.
  • Change the daily strain. Simple changes to how you sit, lift, bend and sleep.
  • Re-check and adjust. Re-exams, and follow-up X-rays when appropriate, show what’s changing. If you aren’t improving as expected, we talk through next steps, including a referral.

Back pain that travels into a leg may be linked to a disc. Read about herniated disc pain. For back problems that keep returning, see our corrective care approach.

Back Pain FAQs

What happens at my first back pain visit?

We start by listening to what’s going on. If you choose to go ahead, we examine your back, take X-rays when appropriate, and explain what we found and what we recommend before any care begins.

Is the consultation really free?

Yes. There’s no charge for the consultation. If you decide to go ahead with an exam, X-rays or care, we’ll go over the cost with you first.

Will a back adjustment hurt?

Adjustments are gentle and adapted to your comfort. Some people feel mild soreness, aches or stiffness afterward, which is normal.

How many visits will I need for back pain?

It depends on what we find, how long you’ve had the pain and your goals. We explain the expected length of care and how often we recommend visits after your exam.

Can you help if I have sciatica or a disc problem?

Many people with sciatica or disc problems come to us. Your exam tells us whether chiropractic care is a good fit, and we refer you for an MRI or a surgical opinion if you need one.

Is there an age limit?

No. We see patients of all ages and adapt care to each person’s age and condition.

How Chiropractic Care May Help Your Back

  • Pain relief: Many patients report less back pain as care progresses. Results vary.
  • Easier movement: Care may help you bend, twist and move more freely.
  • Drug-free care: Our care doesn’t involve medication. Keep taking anything your doctor prescribed, and talk with them before changing it.
  • Managing flare-ups: Home exercises, posture habits and optional check-ups may help you manage recurring back pain.

Don’t Let Back Pain Hold You Back!

You don’t have to just put up with back pain. Book a free consultation at our Phoenix–Ahwatukee or North Scottsdale office. We’ll find out what’s going on and, if chiropractic care is a good fit, build a plan to help you get back to your normal activities.
